Firstly we were really lucky with the weather, dry when it seems like all our training has been done in the wet. Instead of a rain jacket, this was a short sleeved top day.
The Great Welsh marathon event itself was extremely well organised. It started in Pembrey national park which is huge and beautiful. After running 5km round the park the route went out along the coast path to Llanelli and then came back to the start. Being an out and back route gave everyone the chance to see everyone else which was great. The course had been advertised as nearly flat, but we beg to differ, it was undulating and as our legs and whole body got more tired each slight climb became much more noticeable.
The event was small (668 runners) by comparison with many. This combined with the route meant that for the last 10 miles you were very much running alone apart from the runners near you and the wonderful marshalls. We all found this challenging and missed the encouragement you get from the crowds willing you on in the bigger city events. This was a real test, keeping on to the end but we all triumphed and got there. A special well done to Amy who got a PB and took an amazing 15 minutes off her previous time in the London marathon and Ed should have the prize for the most photographed shorts on the course.
It has been great to have other Whippets working towards the same event so we can share training, plus on the day it made such a difference having company. We all would like to thank all those Whippets who have helped us, whether it has been with advice and training plans and joining us on training runs. Each and everyone of you has made a real difference in a marathon that none of us found easy. You know who you are and believe us your help is really really appreciated.
Ed, Leanne, Chris and Amy
Five Weston Whippet runners (Karen, Mike, Nic, Helen and Chris) joined the 20,000 other runners running 10k through the heart of London.
This is a great course, starting in Trafalgar Square and running past theatres and famous landmarks, like St Paul’s cathedral to finish in Whitehall at the entrance to Downing Street.
There was a huge amount of support from cheering crowds with what felt like music at every corner varying from choirs to steel drum groups.
Such a great atmosphere. All the Whippets had an excellent run and as Nic said, “I felt strong”.
Two of our club members took part in Cardiff Half this year.
Both Chris and George ran brilliantly and crossed the line in 2:03:16 and 2:14:08 - excellent running ladies.
The forecast was wet and as we approached Cardiff rain started. However overall we were lucky with the weather. Cool and mostly dry, a lovely temperature for running.
The route of the half marathon is super. It starts at the castle and it is one loop round the city taking in the docks. It is flattish but has a few climbs. Yesterday it felt like all of Cardiff was out to cheer us on. The support was amazing and I could have eaten my body weight in sweets.
There was also 4 water stations plus a Lucozade station and a gel station so we runners were well look after.
This is a huge event, almost 22500 runners, so there were a lot of crowds around the start and finish area. But this did lead to a great atmosphere throughout the city centre.
Thanks to Chris for this write up.
A team of 6 enjoyed a ladies weekend in Windsor to take on this lovely event. The race is set within Windsor Great Park, with the start and finish set on The Long Walk Road. There are so many sights along the route, including the Royal Lodge, the Royal School and the Statue of Queen Elizabeth II. This is such a beautiful route with a fair few hills thrown in to keep you on your toes. The last 2km is almost all downhill to the finish with beautiful Windsor Castle as the back drop.
Our team ran wonderfully at such a well organised and friendly race. Massive well done to Amy who managed to get a brilliant 10k pb on such an undulating course.
We're looking forward to returning next year.
